The 2016 Next 20 chains are both established — they posted $1.71 billion in sales in their latest fiscal year — and still developing. The brands grew systemwide sales an average of 43.26 percent and increased unit count by an average of 32.31 percent in their last year. Pizza concepts dominate the group. The brands vary widely in size, from chicken chain Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken, with $160.4 million in U.S. systemwide sales, to Russo’s New York Pizzeria/Coal-Fired Italian Kitchen, with $41.2 million.
